Background

At ACES we develop the science essential for sustainable environmental management. We seek to unify environmental, social and economic approaches through inter-disciplinary science involving policy makers and stakeholders.

As human pressures on the environment continually increase, it is ever more critical to find sustainable solutions to environmental management. How should our wildlife, our natural resources and our ecosystems be managed in the face of increasing and diverse pressures? Solutions require an understanding of the consequences of different management approaches and an ability to balance the needs of society and the environment.

Conflicts arise when people have profound differences over how the environment should be managed and such conflicts challenge our ability to find sustainable and just solutions. Reconciling these pressures requires an understanding of how human and natural systems interact, their interdependencies and their changing relationships over time. Solutions to these conflicts demand strong science and an ability to develop dialogue with relevant stakeholders, with a focus both on the fundamental drivers of environmental problems and on strategies for their management here and now.
