Research Interests

My current research involves comparative studies on the implementation of new water management approaches (especially the EU Water Framework Directive and equivalent Latin American legislations). The main topics that I am interested include: water institutional reforms, environmental justice, public participation and stakeholder conflicts, environmental governance and sector regulation (in particular, hydropower, agriculture and public water supply). My theoretical influences are somewhat eclectic, ranging from environmental management to political ecology and critical realism.

Previous academic work was mainly focused on sustainability assessment, including the development of sustainability indicators through the combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods.

In the School of Geosciences, I am a member of the Human-Environment Interactions research group. I am also a research fellow at the Aberdeen Centre for Environmental Sustainability (ACES), a partnership between the University and The Macaulay Institute.

Main research projects currently involved:

  • Integrated farm to catchment governance (DEFRA funded and IGER organized, in partnership with N. Watson and R. Fish).
  • Water politics and regulatory reforms in Lima, Peru (Leverhulme Research Fellowship).
  • The introduction of bulk water charges in the Douro River, Portugal (Royal Society of Edinburgh & Carnegie Trust for the Universities of Scotland funded).
  • The perception of water value in peripheral neighbourhoods of the Metropolitan Area of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (funded by the Brazilian Research Council - CNPq, in partnership with Henri Acselrad).
  • Sustainable management of water in the Pantanal, South American wetland (funded by The Leverhulme Trust). International research network. See more information about this international network at www.aces.ac.uk/PantanalInternationalNetwork.htm
