Current Research

Project: Livestock grazing and upland carbon sequestration

Stuart Smith is a PhD student working at University of Aberdeen (School of Biological Sciences) and Macaulay Land use Research Institute. He is researching the impact of livestock grazing (sheep and cattle) on upland carbon storage and cycling.  Livestock grazing is the dominant land use in the uplands in the UK and across Europe. Appropriate land use management is now seen as a potential tool to enhance carbon sequestration, mitigating human CO2 emissions to the atmosphere. To address this issue, Stuart is utilising a landscape-scale grazing experiment that has been underway at the Glen Finglas estate, Scotland (NN514108) since 2003. There are four grazing treatments including commercial sheep stocking, one-third sheep commercial stocks, mixed cattle and sheep, and no livestock; each taking place in six replicate 3.3 hectare plots. The size of this experiment, and vegetation heterogeneity within it; offer a challenging, yet important context for study of the carbon cycle.

Supervisors: René van der Wal (ACES), Sarah Woodin (UoA), David Johnson (UoA) and Robin Pakeman (JHI).
