ACES in Society
ACES staff have been involved in a range of high profile activities, informing and advising industry and Government at national and international levels.
Selection of ACES in Society projects:
- René van der Wal continues to lead on parts of DEFRA's National Ecosystem Assessment.
- Michelle Pinard was invited to assess the carbon monitoring programme developed for the INFAPRO Project in Malaysia; a large carbon mitigation project funded by the FACE Foundation of the Netherlands.
- Antonio Ioris was invited to co-ordinate a work package research in the intitutional weaknesses in relation to climate change adaptation in the Paraguay River Basin, funded by the Brazilian Research Council (CNPq).
- Andy Taylor has discussed his research on tv and radio and in a National Geographic documentary. He has also had a Knowledge Exchange project amalgamating the beauty and science of peatbogs.
- The findings of the Sustainable Uplands project, led by Mark Reed, have been used in a number of national and international policy processes. These include DEFRA's 2011 White Paper on the Natural Environment, the UK Government Commission for Rural Communities' Uplands Inquiry, the Uplands Review for the Government Office for Science Foresight Land Use Futures project and the policy review for IUCN's Commission of Inquiry on Peatlands.
- Eva Krupp co-hosted a United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) Workshop on 'Mercury Waste Management'. Policy makers from across the world visited labs and learned about environmentally sound management of mercury containing wastes.
- Iain Mackie advised governments in SE Asia on the value of biodiversity.
- Steve Redpath continues to advise UK policy makers on predator management and is involved in long-term dialogue processes with a wide range of stakeholders.
